by Cristal d'Arques Factory, France |
For more than 3,000 years glass has played a unique role in the history of wine, in terms of both serving glasses and decanters and storage bottles. Wine was sometimes drunk from glass tumblers and surviving examples show astonishingly intricate craftsmanship. However early glass had problems because trace elements like iron discolored the glass. In 1675 in the southern English workshops of George Ravenscroft, lead crystal glass making was discovered. Diamond clear lead crystal became the goal of fine glass production. Crystal production and fine glass production using blown, cut and polished crystal led to a variety of different glasses designed and produced to be used specifically for certain wines, and by the end of the 18th century the concept of a uniformly decorated glass service was well established throughout Europe.
