BREAK-RESISTANT GLASS
BY LUMINARC

HAMMER A NAIL INTO A BOARD WITH A WATER GLASS?

We don't recommend doing this, however this is exactly what they were doing at a trade show to demonstrate the strength and durability of fully tempered break and chip-resistant glass.
You can't do this with all Luminarc Classico products, however you will be amazed with the strength and durability of fully tempered glass bakeware.

In 2005 Arcuisine was folded into
Arc Internationals Luminarc line as Luminarc Classico.

LUMINARC CLASSICO - fully tempered break and chip-resistant glass is five times stronger then non-tempered glassware. Fully Tempered to resist impact and thermal shock this glassware is break and chip-resistant, oven safe, freezer safe, dishwasher safe, and microwave safe. Classico cookware has a special micro-smooth easy-clean surface. Please, for best performance, do not use abrasive powders or scrubbers to clean Classico cookware as they can damage the micro-smooth surface.

LUMINARC CLASSICO Extra Resistant Tempered Glass Ovenware is recommended by the manufacturer for use with traditional and microwave ovens, grills, refrigerator, freezer and dishwasher safe. May be used over a flame on your stovetop or on an electric stove element with a diffuser and on a moderate heat. Avoid placing the hot dish onto a cold or wet surface, or pouring cold liquid into a very hot dish.

Temperature range -40° C / -40° F to +300° C / +472° F

FULLY TEMPERED glassware is created by slowly heating, then quickly cooling specially formulated glass one or more times. This process is very similar to tempering of steel in the manufacturing of quality knives or tools. Tempering produce multiple layers within the glass that strengthens the glass, increasing the impact resistance more than five times. Tempering also eliminates stress points to withstand temperature extremes.

Other manufacturers offer tempered glasses, however this often is just tempering the rim and not the whole glass.

SAFETY - Because of its strength fully tempered glass forms small popcorn size pellets, not large knife like shards when it breaks. Because you are much less likely to get a serious injury from these small pieces tempered glass is often called "safety glass." Examples of tempered glass in everyday use are glass shower doors, and automobile side and rear windows. Modern building codes require the use of tempered glass in windows that start closer then eighteen inches to the floor and all doors.

WHEN DOES IT BREAK? - Fully tempered glass may not break when it is damaged. Damage by impact after slipping or dropping on a hard surface seems to be the most often reported cause. The stress is often stored and it may be released, by shattering, weeks or months later sometimes without obvious cause. Thermal stress often precipitates stress-relief shattering. The release of the stored stress may cause the glass to scatter popcorn like pieces over a large area. Do not continue to use tempered glass that is damaged, it should be recycled and replaced with undamaged glass.
